Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.

The site, located using surveillance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a number of entry passages down to the site... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of a great many UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, highlights how British military are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says Daesh still maintains between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
